Cancer undoubtably puts you out of your comfort zone in a multitude of ways. What if you had the opportunity to step out of your zone, by choice, be pampered, get back to nature and learn a new fantastic hobby? That’s what the Reeling & Healing Midwest Fly Fishing Wellness Retreat was all about. My friend, Donnanne, and I spent the last couple of days away from the regular hustle and bustle of life on the Au Sable River in Grayling, Michigan. This retreat was for women battling and surviving cancer who want to learn how to fly fish. There were 10 of us “participants” (age range late 30’s to early 70’s) and at least 20 volunteers. From the moment of our arrival, the volunteers were there to take care of us. We weren’t even allowed to carry our bags to our room! These volunteers, both men and women, gave up time from their lives, jobs and families to teach total strangers how to fly fish. They were skilled in sharing their knowledge and kept us safe, well fed and entertained.
We have to say that we were a little worried that this retreat would be a hand holding Kumbaya tear fest, but it wasn’t. The retreat was mainly focused on introducing us to the art of fly fishing. There wasn’t much down time between learning about technique (knot tying and casting), eating fabulous food, fishing and getting to know new people. The leader, Cathy, had several little treats and activities for us throughout the time we were there to help us renew our spirit and hope. New friendships were made, stories were shared, and a lot of hugs were given.
We are giving two thumbs up to Reeling & Healing Midwest!!

That’s sounds AMAZING! I want to go! What a great experience. So glad you got the chance to meet some new people, learn a new skill and commune with nature. Not to mention take a break from your everyday routine.

Well said, took the words right out of my mouth! Haha! It was a great experience. I have told people in the social work world, seems to be a hidden gem. I will do my part to spread the word. Nice pic, you looked so fab in your fitted waders…
