It’s hard to believe that it’s been two years since I found a lump and this crazy breast cancer journey began! In the coming days, weeks and months I will commemorate many “Cancerversaries”: the day I was diagnosed, the day we told our children, the day of surgery, the day of my first chemo treatment, the day my hair began falling out, the day I had my head shaved, and my last day of treatment.
As I look back on these two years I feel blessed! So many positive things have come from a rotten situation. I love my renewed strength, energy, and outlook on life. I cherish my new breast cancer friends and enjoy helping others through the creation of The Licorice Project!
Last May, a friend of mine was diagnosed and told me, “I’m upset that I have to wait until June 15th for my surgery”. I answered, “June 15th? That was the day I had my surgery. What a coincidence!” We decided that in the future we would celebrate this cancerversary together.
This year, on June 15th, my friend and I will be participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life at Gillson Park in Wilmette, IL. We invite you to join us to help Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back. You can do so by joining Team Licorice Project or simply walking with us in the Survivor’s Lap, which will take place @6:30pm (no fee and you a get a free t-shirt!). A cancerversary, like everyone’s cancer journey, is unique. Perhaps it’s a date that you celebrate or simply a time to reflect. What’s your cancerversary story? Please share it with us!
